The colored history of Sicily includes the Greeks and the Romans to the 20th century mafia. This island, while part of Italy, has a history of its own. The many remaining Greek and Roman structures are in contrast to the beach side resorts offering incredible holidays to travelers from throughout the world. The island is mountainous with a beautiful rugged coastline. The food and wine produced here is unique and is heralded as some of the finest in the world.
Day 1
Arrive in Palermo. Transportation to hotel and Welcome Dinner!
Day 2
Guided tour of Palermo and environs. Palermo originated as a Phoenician colony and is now the most lively and important city in Sicily. Arranged wine tasting lunch. Afternoon free time or optional short visit to Corleone to see the town of mafia fame.
Day 3
Visit to the medieval village of Erice. This walled village with cobblestone streets sit high on a mountainside with views that suggest that you can see as far as Africa. Lunch in Trapani and time to stroll the historic center and the port before returning to Palermo.
Day 4
Transportation to Taormina. Guided visit of Taormina and the well preserved classical theater. This town is one of the best known resorts in Sicily and quite lively during the summer months. Overnight in Taormina.
Day 5
Visit to Siricusa. Siricusa was once the supreme power of Europe due to its location on the trade routes. This is perhaps one of the most pleasant towns to spend a relaxing afternoon enjoying the local culture. Visit to a local wine producer for a wine tasting. Return to Taormina.
Day 6
Visit to Caltagirone, a village noted for ceramic production. Lunch and return to Palermo. Grand Finale Dinner!
Day 7
Depart from Palermo.
While Sicily is one of the poorest regions of Italy, its raw beauty, bold wines, spicy seafood dishes, and wonderful people makes this a 21st century destination that you don't want to miss. Think about how much more meaning it will give to all those 'Godfather' movies.
